TEHRAN Recent heavy rainfall in Gilan Province has put tens of thousands of fish and fingerlings to death in Anzali pond, said Mohammad Piri, head of the Center for Research on Fishery Sciences in Gilan Province yesterday.
He said such incidents break out every year during the same period of time, adding that Anzali pond is one of the main places for growth of bony fish living in southern waters of the Caspian Sea.
He said that life of sea animals is exposed to threat in the Caspian Sea waters if proper measures are not taken by the officials as soon as possible.
Civil, industrial and agricultural waste have so far damaged the environment, Piri said.
Meanwhile, some 60,000 different fish entrapped in the small ponds around the Qezel Ozan River, Zanjan Province, were carried back to the river by the local officials of the provincial Department of the Environment , said Majid Abadi, the director general of the department yesterday.
The fish were entrapped in the ponds created due to the drought in the current year.
